Physical and mechanical properties of epoxy reinforced with pistachio shell particulates

۸ بازديد
Recently, natural fillers have gain huge interest among the academic researchers and scientists to be used as potential reinforcement material in polymeric matrix composites.
pistachio shell
The various reasons which attract the scientific community toward it usage in polymer composites are its low cost, ample availability, easy processing and the most important is the growing concern towards environmental awareness as they are bio-degradable. Reinforcing natural fillers is also an efficient approach towards waste management as most of the promising natural fillers were dumped if not used. Following the similar trend, an attempt has been made to utilize pistachio shells as a filler material in polymeric resin for developing a composite body. Pistachio shell with particle size 75 micron is used with epoxy matrix in present investigation. Six sets of epoxy based composites are fabricated using hand lay-up method by varying the filler content upto 30 wt. %. Density of the composites is evaluated using Archimedes principle. Micrographs are taken to visualize the compatibility between filler and matrix body. Tensile strength, compressive strength, flexural strength and hardness are the various mechanical properties evaluated of the developed materials. From the experimental analysis, it has been found that, all the mechanical properties of the composite under consideration increases with filler content. Though increase in density is also observed with filler loading but the increment is marginal. On the basis of experimental findings, it can be concluded that the developed material can be gainfully found its application in light duty structures.

Homemade tincture on pistachio shells – the right recipe

During the first tasting, it is difficult to guess that this is a simple pistachio tincture, more like an aged cognac. If you follow the cooking technology, you will get a cognac-colored drink with a smoked-woody aroma, light notes of coffee and vanilla. The taste is richly oaky with a vanilla-cream aftertaste.pistachio shell

Not the pistachios (nuts) themselves are required, but only the shell, which contains the necessary aromatic and coloring substances. As an alcoholic base, it is advisable to use grain or fruit moonshine (distillate), vodka or ethyl alcohol diluted to 40% is also suitable. Cognac and other strong spirits aged in barrels in this case give too strong a tannic taste.

Ingredients:

moonshine (vodka, alcohol 40%) – 1 liter;
pistachio shell – 2 handfuls;
sugar (honey) – 1-2 tablespoons (to taste);
prunes – 2 berries (optional);
dried apricots – 1 piece (optional);
raisins – 4-6 berries (optional).
Dried fruits (especially prunes) enrich the aroma and soften the taste of the tincture, but can only be made on pistachios. Honey and sugar give a sweetness that not everyone likes, so I advise you to limit yourself to a maximum of a few spoons or not to make at all.

Recipe for tincture on pistachios
1. Wash the pistachio shells in running water, then boil in boiling water for 4-5 minutes, remove from the water and dry in the sun. Boiling removes the salt (if the pistachios were originally salty), as well as excess tannins, as a result, the tincture will not be too sharp.

2. Fry the shell in the oven (8-10 hours on a dry baking sheet at 60-90°C, stirring occasionally) or in a well-wiped frying pan (without oil and fat) over medium heat until dark brown (pictured). Languishing in the oven gives a softer and more delicate taste, but roasting in a frying pan takes much less time.

фото обжаренной скорлупы фисташек

The stronger the roasting, the more notes of smoke, almonds and vanilla tint appear. The main thing is that the shells do not burn.

3. Pour the cooled shell into the jar and pour the alcohol base. Add dried fruits (optional). Close the lid.

4. Leave the container for 8-15 days in a dark, warm place.

Attention! After 8-10 days of infusing, check the taste once a day and if there are too strong notes of hardness, remove the pistachios. The amount of tannins depends on the shell and changes each time, if overexposed, the drink will turn out sharp and tasteless.

5. Filter the pistachio tincture through cheesecloth. Taste it, sweeten it with sugar or liquid honey if desired. Stir until the sweetener is completely dissolved.

6. Pour the drink into bottles, seal tightly. It is advisable to leave at least 30-60 days in the refrigerator or basement. Aging softens the taste.

The shelf life of the tincture on pistachios is up to 5 years (when stored in glass containers away from direct sunlight). Strength – 36-38%.

Pistachios Have Never been Easier To Shell Thanks To This TikTok Tip
Pistachio nuts are delicious, but boy are they a faff!?

Pistachios are one of the tastiest nuts out there. Tell us we’re wrong, and we’re going to have a fight on our hands, okay reader?

But boy, are pistachio nuts a pain. Shelling those little fellas can not only take ages, it can also be a dangerous activity. Those shells have hella sharp edges, so a cut finger can happen in the blink of an eye. And once you get salt from the nut in there, you’re done for. Not to mention the number of broken nails we’ve experienced thanks to pistachios. RIP all those expensive manicures from our past. pistachio shell

So, when we found out that there’s a much easier way of shelling pistachio nuts, we took notice.

According to this video from @motorcityeats on TikTok, instead of pulling the shell apart at the open end with your fingernail, you simply need to push the part of the shell that is attached. Confused? Watch this…

Can You Compost Pistachio Shells? (And Are They Biodegradable?)
Pistachio-Shells
When someone tells you ‘you must be nuts!’, do you get mad or feel bad about yourself? Well, don’t! Nuts are known to contain essential nutrients and can aid weight loss and heart and gut health. Some of the world’s most famous nuts include peanuts, walnuts, almonds, cashews, macadamia, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts and of course pistachios. pistachio shell

Pistachio nuts are not only tasty and fun to eat but also super healthy. They contain healthy fats and are a good source of protein, fiber, and antioxidants. Apart from the nutty and sweet part that is consumed, the other common thing with the pistachio is the exterior shell. They are not edible and are most likely thrown away or used for decorative purposes. This article looks into composting pistachio shells and tries to explain if they can be composted.

Are Pistachio Shells Compostable?
Luckily for you, pistachio shells are compostable. Nutshells like pistachio shells are good for composting. Using compost, including that made of pistachio shells, is one of the best ways to nourish your plants.

Not only does it retain moisture, enrich the soil, and fight against insects and plant diseases, compost is better for the environment than many commercially produced fertilizers. Compost also lowers your carbon footprint by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers.

The shells may take a few years to decompose, so they make the compost less heavy, even though they add bulk. Pistachio shells also help with water retention. The compost might not be applicable for use for sowing small seeds or potting on delicate baby plants, but the shells can make good compost, fine for your vegetable patch or flower beds.

You should be careful not to add the shells as a whole as they are directly into the composting bin. If you add them whole, be prepared to wait for two years or more before they completely decompose. Instead of simply tossing them like that, be sure to crush them first. If they are broken into pieces or a fine powder, they decompose more quickly.

You should also use unsalted pistachio shells for the composting bin or pile. Salted pistachios are not bad while in the bin unless you are composting only a few and if the pile is large enough. Too much salt in the composting bin will contaminate the soil. The salt also kills any microorganisms and natural bacteria in the compost, delaying the composting process.

As such, to be on the safer side, just use unsalted pistachio nut shells in your compost. You can also soak the salted shells overnight to get the salt off the shells. Oh, and for the record, other nuts and nut shells can be used in the compost bin, but then again, avoid salted nuts and nutshells.

Pistachio shells are a terrific bulky ‘brown’ material for compost. Browns are materials that are carbon-rich and will add structure to your compost and aeration to the pile. They are hard and slow to degrade, but you can speed up the process considerably by crushing them up before tossing them in.

Another option is to soak whole shells in a bucket of water overnight to soften them. The next day, dump the pistachio shells, along with the water, into your compost heap.

Composting pistachio shells reduces the levels of methane emissions from landfills, reduces the need to use chemical fertilizers and encourages the production of beneficial fungi and bacteria that break down organic matter to create humus. Composting also helps the soil retain moisture, enriches it, and suppresses pests and plant diseases.

How Long Do Pistachio Shells Take to Decompose

How Long Do Pistachio Shells Take to Decompose?
If added to the composting pile whole, without being broken down into smaller pieces, the shells can stay up to two years without them decomposing. Another source suggests that pistachio shells can take even longer than 3 years to biodegrade in the outdoors. pistachio shell

Where the compost is prepared well, aerated well, moistened as it should be and turned regularly, with the pistachio shells crushed before being added to the mix, the process can take between eight and twelve months to complete.

Pistachio shells are a member of the browns so yes, pistachio shells are compostable. The next time you are having them as a snack you put them in a bag to add them to the compost pile. They are a terrific bulky brown material.

7+ Unique Ways to Use Old Pistachio Shells
1. Mulch
You can save up your pistachio shells and mix them with wood chip, bark, leaves, or other organic mulch before scattering them over the garden. Covering your garden beds with a generous layer of mulch is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also helps keep the soil moist, boost fertility, and suppress weeds.

Remember, whole pistachio shells are fairly tough and hard and will take ages to fully break down. As they do, they will slowly release carbon, fats, proteins, and carbohydrates to feed the earth

2. Fire kindling
Pistachio shells are made of woody materials that make them ideal for fire-making. To start or revive a dying fire, toss a handful or two of pistachio shells to get things going. They are a great kindling for enclosed fire pits and wood stoves.

Be careful before adding them to an open campfire, as the nutshells contain fats that pop and sizzle when exposed to high heat. Therefore, give the open fires plenty of space after adding the shells.

You can also make a fire starter by crumpling pistachio shells up in newspaper before tossing them in. This will help stop them from jumping out of the flames.

3. Making crafts
Ingenious crafters have uncovered numerous ways to incorporate pistachio shells into their do-it-yourself projects. The shells have a curved shape, and they can be made to look like beautiful flowers that will never wilt and die.

When painted and placed right, pistachio shells can look like beautiful succulents. You can try making gorgeous hanging succulent flowers, or a bright and cherry-painted floral wreath, a decorative tree, a lovely ombre necklace or make an array of lotus candle holders. You can also create beautiful mosaics with the shells, including mosaic wall art, 3D paintings, to fruit baskets.

4. Deterring pests

Pistachio shells can also be used to deter irksome critters. Simply spread the shells as a thick top dressing around outdoor plants to deter squirrels, chipmunks, and raccoons from digging in the soil. The shells can also be used to deter slugs and snails, but only if the shells are salted.

Create a blockade against slimy gastropods by sprinkling the shells in a line around individual plants or the entire perimeter of the garden. Indoors, pistachio shells can be added to houseplant containers to prevent our furry friends from messing with our beloved greens.

In-shell pistachios: The original 'slow food?'

In-shell pistachios: The original 'slow food?'

Two studies published in the current on-line issue of the journal Appetite indicate that consuming in-shell pistachios is a weight-wise approach to healthy snacking, offering unique mindful eating benefits to help curb consumption and decrease calorie intake. pistachio shell

The first study found that participants who consumed in-shell pistachios ate 41-percent fewer calories compared to those who consumed shelled pistachios. The second study revealed that pistachio nut shells can provide important "visual cues" as a reminder of consumption that translate into reduced calorie consumption. Both studies further underscore that in-shell pistachios, which are one of the lowest calorie nuts, are a practical, everyday snack for weight management.

"In-shell pistachios are the original 'slow food.' The findings of these studies demonstrate that pistachios, as one of the only in-shell snack nuts, help slow consumption; and further, that the empty shells offer a visual cue, reducing calorie intake," said behavioral eating expert and study author, James Painter, Ph.D., R.D., Chair of the School of Family and Consumer Sciences at Eastern Illinois University. "In fact, the term 'Pistachio Principle' has been coined to describe a simple technique that can be used to help fool yourself full."

In-Shell Pistachio Consumption Curbs Calories by 41-Percent Compared to Shelled Pistachios

The first study published in Appetite involved 140 university students assigned to consume either in-shell pistachios or shelled pistachios during class time. Both groups of students were provided a 16-ounce cup and asked to self-select a portion of pistachios to consume during class. Each student's cup of pistachios was weighed before consumption began. As students left the classroom, the remaining pistachios were weighed and recorded; total weight and calories from the consumed pistachios was also calculated. Those who chose shelled pistachios consumed an average of 211 calories while those who chose in-shell pistachios consumed an average of 125 calories, a 41-percent decrease in calorie intake.

The second study published examined the potential role of pistachio shells as visual cues of intake. Study subjects included 118 faculty and staff from a Midwestern university, all of whom were provided a pre-weighed 16-ounce bowl filled with four ounces of in-shell pistachios to keep on their desk over the course of two workdays separated by a day of no pistachio consumption. Participants were told they could consume pistachios at their leisure during the day and were also provided a second 16-ounce bowl to discard the pistachio empty shells.

The subjects were randomized using a crossover design to one of two groups. For the first group, the bowls with pistachio shells were not emptied until the end of the day. For the second group, the bowls with pistachio shells were emptied every two hours. Pistachios were added in two-ounce increments if the amount in the bowl had been reduced to approximately half or less of the starting amount.

"When leftover pistachio shells remained on the desk throughout the day, calorie consumption of pistachios decreased by 22-percent compared to when nut shells were routinely removed," said Painter. "Choosing in-shell pistachios instead of shelled nuts is a simple way to decrease calorie consumption without restriction. This is in keeping with existing research showing that when a person has visual cues of 'leftovers,' such as pistachio shells, they can see how many or how much they have eaten, helping to control portion size and consumption."

Pistachios – "The Skinny Nut" – Support Weight Management

This new data reinforcing the mindful eating benefits of in-shell pistachios adds to the existing body of research supporting pistachio's weight management benefits. According to researchers at the University of California Los Angeles, choosing to snack on pistachios rather than pretzels supports body mass index (BMI) goals. And research conducted by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and recently published in the British Journal of Nutrition found that fat in pistachios may not be completely absorbed by the body, indicating that pistachios may actually contain fewer calories per serving than originally thought.

In addition to the data on pistachios, a recent study by researchers at Harvard University found that consumption of nuts, as well as vegetables, whole grains, fruits and yogurt, was inversely associated with weight gain with nuts exhibiting a (-).57 pound effect on body weight.

Pistachios are one of the lowest calorie nuts with 160 calories per 30 gram serving (approximately 1 ounce). They also offer the most nuts per serving, providing about 49 kernels per 30 gram serving (approximately 1 ounce), when compared to other popular snack nuts – comparatively, almonds have 23 in a serving, walnuts 14 halves and cashews, 18. Pistachios are also a good source of fiber and protein.
